Clocking in at around an hour, this debut from the progressive act Kamero is a mind boggling journey to say the least. With the obvious statement out of the way, this album definitely requires multiple listens and attention to details. Starting with the somber ‘86’, the album moves on to the frantic “Kram” and sets the mood and tone of the concept album. Yes!! It is a concept album, a rarity in the Nepalese music scene and the mood of the songs definitely show that it is not a happy story. The album moves on to “Pragmatic Delusions” and “Sanchhyov” which have in time become crowd favorites during their gigs. The lyrics themes build up mostly as self-reflections and this pending sense of turmoil all leading to the chaotic to say the least – and definitely the most unique track on the album entitled “Freudian Slip”. A Neo-Freudian polish is seen in the lyrical themes along with philosophies on existential crisis and a questioning of reality per se. The title track and “Freudian Sleep” follow with the latter being one of the heaviest tracks on the album. The lyrical side of things definitely is cryptic and deciphering them in our own way is definitely a delight. If you were a fan of concept albums and lyricism while and as you were growing up, this album will surely be a treat for you. “Nepenthe(S)” follows suit with this hypnotic aura and the accompanying music video only adds upon it. The mammoth of a track “Triad” follows with a 15-minute length and is definitely a highlight of the album taking you through different moods and 3 lyrical sections written by 3 different members of the band. The album closes with the drowsy “Interlude” which sounds like an open ending to a movie – maybe what the story of the album aimed for. A quick chat with the band revealed that this particular song was just a home studio experiment but just fit so well with the album that it got included as a hidden track. Each song has been thematically layered with effects and ambience (definitely home brewed) and the transition tracks, dialogues, instrumentals gives a cohesive listen from start to finish. Listen. Dissect. Repeat! Progressive music is a rarity in our scene these days and we hope Kamero will definitely be a flag bearer with the second album that they are currently working on.
