The idea of combining core and death metal is exciting. The viciousness of death metal combined with the assertive core music, an alluring mixture for many bands. It’s in a metalhead’s nature–not always angry and not always solemn. Desperate Mile, with their debut release Hate N' Regret attempt to merge both. Exploding with entrails and fury, opener "Cre(h)ate" showers you with its visceral groove while "Kill Will Hate" switches between cacophonous speed and a lurching, sludgy crawl backed by bendy guitar lines. The concussive couplet of "We Will Prevail Reign" is pure pulverizing ugliness. "Gore In Core" opens with an ambience, something you'd hear in a nightmare, followed by squeals and a riff that sounds like repeated hammer blows to the head and gets less subtle from there. Penultimate cut "You're A Fucking Coward" is two and a half minutes of fairly self-explanatory extreme violence before the album closes with cover of Carnifex's "Lie To My Face". All originals being less than 3 minutes in length waste no time to hammer the creeping, murderous intent of the band. The core presence without falling into full death/core territory is a tactic pulled off tremendously. Brutal rhythms doused in this aesthetic, served alongside some guttural vocals that bury beneath the sand for sharper squeals to grate your skin. The drums pop out with a mechanical click, giving the snare such an elementary feeling for all the right reasons.
