Nepal is seeing a surge and a revival of rock in different forms and Rockgene is definitely one of them flag bearers. Blatantly titled "Balaatkaar", thus 8 tracker is an explosive affair that starts off with the title track. A few time signature switches and a straight up powerhouse of a song, this song gives you an idea of what's to follow. Laced with alternative rock, nu metal and modern rock - it is a kickass start to the album. "Swatantra Jeewan" comes in next that talks about the hopes and expectations that others put upon you. The singer has a certain tenor to her voice and it rings out. "Naari" is along the same vein with riffs galore and a heavy mix. "Timi Nai" - and the titles mades us wonder if this will be a mellower tune - and it was. A ballad at its core, this shows a different side to the band that has been pulled off well. Every instrument has proper space on this one. "Inside My Head" is the only English track of this record and it almost feels like a pro-wrestling entrance theme and kudos to the basswork on this one. "Aja Ko Nimti" feels like a grand track as if the band wished to make something anthemic. The vocals soar high on this one. "Raat Ki Chari" almost feels like a Deep Purple revisit and in the best way possible and the band sounds the most free on this one. A retro trip this one and a highlight for us. "Junibharilai" closes off the album and is the second soft corner on this. The flutes and orientation gives this a lovely feel and is a lovely closure with the entry of madals being the surprising element. Rockgene feels like a band bound to finding their sound and open to growth and this is a promising album.
