Stylish and scrappy, Ayusy's debut album "Nothing Special" has plenty to offer as a portrait of a young beat maker sharpening his craft. A brief spin through the twenty-eight-minute record, the release demonstrates Ayusy's keen ear for eclectic sounds. The tracks hopscotches all over the grid, from the blown-out "Journey" to the breezy, dub-flecked ambience of "Feelings". Beginning with ambient guitars, "Clouds” builds up into gleeful glitchery. The music is seductive, almost narcotic, with synth pads exhaling in long, overlapping layers. The unifying thread of "Nothing Special" is its production aesthetic, which feels comfortably lived-in, never sterile or cartoonishly overdone, something that can be a make-or-break factor. It seems that everyone and wants to jack gauzy throwback aesthetics to color their beats lately, and it's refreshing that Ayusy demonstrates imagination and humanity in his presentation.
